Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Perform physical exams and health histories
  2. Provide health promotion, counseling and education
  3. Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized interventions
  4. Interpret patient information and make critical decisions about needed actions
  5. Coordinate care, in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals
  6. Direct and supervise care delivered by other healthcare personnel like LPNs and nurse aides
  7. Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes
Salary:  Average salary of $66,640 in 2014. Reported salaries ranged from $45,880 for those in the lowest 10% to more than $98,880 in the highest 10% of earners.


Education: Becoming an RN requires the completion of a postsecondary program, usually an associate or bachelor's degree, although a few hospitals have teaching programs that offer diplomas. Aspiring nurses learn about topics such as anatomy and human development and gain extensive supervised clinical experience. Nurses also must be licensed in their states, which requires passing an exam.


Demand for this profession: employment for registered nurses (RNs) is expected to increase 16% by 2024, which is faster than the national average for all other occupations.
