Dentist
Duties and responsibilities: dentist examines patients
through observation and use of equipment and tools such as dental mirrors,
picks and X-ray machines. He looks for immediate repairs, such as cavities and
fractures. He also looks for early signs of future problems, and indicators of
deeper issues, such as wearing, small cracks in the enamel and chips. He
examines the gums, mouth, tongue palette and temporomandibular joints, which
are on both side of your head in front of your ears, for abnormalities
including lumps, sores, discolorations, gum bleeding or recession, and joint
popping and clicking. Examination can lead to the early diagnosis and treatment
of severe health issues of the mouth and nearby structures, such as an abnormal
bite, clenching and grinding, gum disease, oral cancer and temporomandibular
joint disorder, also known as TMJ, which is a painful condition that can cause
head and face pain.
Salary: The average salary for a Dentist is $123,787 per
year. The skills that increase pay for this job the most are General Surgery,
Dentistry, General dentist, dentist, and Oral Surgery.
Education: Education Requirements. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that most dental students obtain a bachelor's degree prior to entering dental school. While no specific undergraduate degree is required, students commonly take science developments in biology, anatomy, chemistry and microbiology.
Reflection: Do you think you would like to be one? Why? Why
not?
No, I don’t think I would like to be a dentist. Although they
help people maintain healthy mouths, I don’t think I am interested in working with
teeth as a career. Dentists take x-rays and refill cavities so they won’t get
to your nerve and you won’t feel pain. Without dentist some people would have
fewer teeth than they do now. Dentists also have the capability to implant you
fake teeth so you won’t have gaps in-between your teeth. In my perspective
being a dentist is one of many important jobs there can be, but I have an
interest in different ideas.
