“Memorial Day”
Memorial day is a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered.
What is the purpose of Memorial Day?
The purpose of Memorial Day is to commemorate all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States.
When is it?
Traditionally observed on May 30 but now officially observed on the last Monday in May.
- Make a soldier's day by writing a thank you card or note to send overseas.
- Show honor and respect by visiting a local veteran’s cemetery, or war memorial.
- Visit and take cookies to a nearby Veteran’s hospital.
- Go to a Memorial Day Parade or watch the National Memorial Day Parade on television.
- Enjoy freedom by spending time with your family.
Additional information: Memorial Day was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. All non-essential Government, offices are closed, as are schools, businesses and other organizations. Many volunteers place an AMerican flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis’ Birthday in Mississippi.
A few things i will do on memorial day to show honor and respect is spend time with my family and enjoy the freedom we have thanks to these soldiers. it is important to commemorate them because they fought for our freedom and endangered themselves knowing it could possibly take their life away.
